Observership
Offered observerships and visiting resident positions
The program is primarily housed at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode
Island (Lifespan Health System) and is offered in 4-week blocks for post-graduates
(candidates must have completed medical school). All applications to be considered
for the upcoming academic year (July-June) are due on April 1st. We generally accept
one observer for each of the following months: August, September, October,
November, January, and February.
*Please note that we will also consider applications for March, April, and May (on a
rolling basis), but only for candidates applying for the Match in that calendar year.
Applications for an observership position during these months (March-May) must be
received at least four (4) months prior to the desired start date.

- USMLE scores
- Personal statement (a brief statement describing your goals and expectations for the observership, your career plans, and why you’ve chosen to apply to the observership program at Lifespan/Brown University)
- Medical School Transcripts
- ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Ranked list of preferred observership months during which you are available (August, September, October, November, January, and February; also March, April, May if you are applying for Match in same calendar year).
Only application packets that are received in full by the above deadline (s) will be
submitted for review by the Director of the Observership Program, with final approval
by the Chief of the Pathology Department.
Successful applicants will be notified by April 30th (or 1 month after submission for
March-May period).
The program is primarily housed at Women's and Infant Hospital, Providence RI, and is offered in 1 or 2-month blocks. Candidates must be enrolled in a residency program. This program welcomes both national and international residents!
